If you are building a playground, you need to ensure it is safe for children to play on. This can include putting a fence around the playground, making sure all equipment is in good condition, and that there are no sharp edges on the equipment. One thing you must do is use mulch for the area around the playground. Children fall easily and they need something soft to land on. If you do not use mulch, falling may result in broken bones or other injuries. To help you, below are two different types of mulch you can choose from, as well as the benefits of each one.
Rubber Playground Mulch
Rubber playground mulch is a natural much that is made of recycled or scrapped tires. This material is also used for golf courses, parks, sports fields, and more. Rubber mulch can be colored so you can make your playground look colorful.
There are many benefits to choosing rubber mulch. First, it is durable, so it lasts a long time. Not only does it protect children from injury, but it also protects the soil under the rubber. Water drains through rubber mulch quickly so the soil is still provided with the water it needs. Because the water drains, there are no puddles on the mulch after it rains for you to take care of. You will not have to worry about the rubber mulch getting slippery. There may be kids that still play on the playground in the rain.
Wood Playground Mulch
Another type of mulch you can choose is wood playground mulch. These are wood chips that come from tree bark, so it is also a natural option for you to use. Once the bark is removed from the trees, it is put through a shredder to create small wood chips. You do have to ensure you put approximately 15 inches of wood mulch to provide the most safety.
Wood chips are generally less expensive than rubber mulch. A mixture of softwood and hardwood is used and mixed together to create the mulch. Once placed on the ground, the chips nest together to create a tight bond. This results in a soft mulch. There are also engineered wood chips that are made of engineered wood fibers. These are even less expensive when compared to wood. You will find that schools and other institutions also use wood mulch on their playgrounds.
